A 45-year-old man died after he was found shot in the chest Tuesday night at a home in Pell City, authorities said.

Deputies with the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office’s Patrol Division responded to Florida Road around 6:43 p.m. Tuesday on a report of theft of property, the office said on its Facebook page.

At the scene, witnesses told deputies of an incident in progress around the 500 block of Florida Road.

Deputies opened the door to a home on the block, where they found the victim, only identified as a 45-year-old man, suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest.

The victim was taken to St. Vincent’s St. Clair, where he died of his injuries, the sheriff’s office said.

A suspect was detained at the home where the man was found shot.

Further information on the incident was not released by the sheriff’s office, citing the ongoing investigation.

The public was told to avoid the area “as investigators gather as much information as possible.”
