Man dies after being shot in East Lake near dice game, police say

A man was shot and killed Monday night in an East Lake parking lot near where people were shooting dice, police said.

East Precinct Officers responded to the parking lot in the 7700 block of First Avenue South around 8 p.m. Monday on a call of a person shot, said Officer Truman Fitzgerald.

Officers found the victim — an adult male — unresponsive in the parking lot suffering from an apparent gunshot wound, Fitzgerald said.

Birmingham Fire & Rescue Service personnel took the man to UAB Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police were still working to confirm what led to the deadly shooting, Fitzgerald said, “however, we can point out that the victim was located near a parking lot area where a group was hanging out this evening shooting dice.

“We don’t know if the shooting is connected to the dice game. However, we can point out when our officers observed the victim he was in an area where dice is still on the ground,” Fitzgerald said.

No suspects were in custody as of 9:30 p.m. Friday, and Fitzgerald said the participants in the dice game were reluctant to talk to police.
