Man dead, male rescued after boat capsizes in southeast Alabama pond, officials say

Authorities rescued a male and recovered a man’s body after a boat capsized in a pond Thursday evening in southwest Alabama, officials said.

A person called 911 around 5:07 p.m. Thursday and told a dispatcher a boat carrying two people capsized in a pond in the 19000 block of U.S. 84 in New Brockton, according to the Coffee County Emergency Management Agency.

New Brockton police officers and New Brockton volunteer firefighters arrived on the scene when the firefighters found the male hanging onto a capsized boat.

Firefighters went into the water and brought the male to shore.

The Elba and Opp fire departments brought boats and a dive team to the scene. The Enterprise Fire Department also provided manpower while Enterprise Rescue Air One was also dispatched to the scene.

The body of the second male – whom Coffee County coroner identified only as a 21-year-old man – was recovered by the dive team.

“While this is not the outcome that we hoped for, we are thankful for the efforts of our first responders to rescue one subject,” the EMA said. “Our thoughts and prayers are lifted up to the families impacted by this incident.”

The rescued male and two firefighters were taken to a local hospital.
