Man convicted of murder, fatally stabbed at Donaldson among 31 to die at the prison in 2022
A 29-year-old inmate was stabbed to death Monday at William Donaldson Correctional Facility has now been identified.
The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office on Wednesday identified the inmate as Joseph Agee III.
Agee was serving a life sentence after pleading guilty to a reduced charge of murder in the 2012 slaying of Natavious Fields in Dallas County. He was initially charged with capital murder because he shot into a vehicle, killing Fields.
Agee died about 6:21 p.m. Monday. The inmate “sustained sharp instrument injuries from another inmate,” according to Chief Deputy Coroner Bill Yates.
His death is being investigated as a homicide.
Agee is the second inmate fatally stabbed at Donaldson in just days.
Denarieya Letrex Smith, 30, died early Saturday of a “sharp force” instrument in what is being investigated as a homicide.
So far this year, 31 inmates have died at Donaldson, surpassing the 2021 tally of 26 for the entire year.
According to the Alabama Department of Corrections, deaths at Donaldson have trended upward in recent years. ADOC said 17 inmates died in 2019, and 22 in 2020.
