Man convicted of capital murder in north Alabama dies in Jefferson County prison

A state inmate died over the weekend at William Donaldson Correctional Facility in western Jefferson County.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified the inmate as Greg Leon Nard. He was 41.

Nard was found unresponsive in his cell on June 13. He was pronounced dead on June 17, said Chief Deputy Coroner Bill Yates.

Yates said an autopsy found no evidence of trauma or foul play. The cause of his death is pending additional laboratory studies.

Nard was one of three men, including his father, convicted of capital murder in 2009 in Lauderdale County. The three Tennessee men were convicted in the 2007 stabbing death of 42-year-old James Gregory White.

Nard’s father, 63-year-old William David Nard, and 58-year-old Norman Ernest Widdoson, remain in the custody of the Alabama Department of Corrections in connection with White’s slaying.
