Man convicted in Selma lounge shooting that killed young mother, wounded another innocent bystander
A Selma man has been convicted in a 2017 outside a nightclub that left a woman dead, and a man injured.
Juantonio Cosby, 36, was found guilty Thursday of murder and first-degree assault, said Dallas County District Attorney Robert Turner Jr. The jury deliberated for less than two hours before returning the verdict.
The shooting happened Oct. 22, 2017, outside the Prime Ultra Lounge in Selma, killing Shykereya Legget and wounding Eddie Williams. Both victims were innocent bystanders.
Turner said Cosby was identified as the shooter.
His co-defendant, 35-year-old Kenneth Ingram pleaded guilty last year to a reduced charge of manslaughter and first-degree assault. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison.
Turner said Cosby and Ingram had been escorted out of the lounge following a fight inside. They returned to the business and that’s when the shooting happened.
“Under this theory, all parties involved with the criminal activity can be charged in the commission of the crimes that resulted,’’ the district attorney said.
Leggett was a 20-year-old mother of a young son.
Turner said the guilty verdict ends a six-year wait for justice for Leggett’s family.
“The memories her family holds of her are as a loving mother, devoted daughter, sister and an aspiring nurse who loved to have fun,’’ Turner said.
The case was prosecuted by Turner and Assistant District Attorney Shamika Dudley.
Circuit Judge Marvin Wiggins will set a sentencing date at a later time.
