Man charged with murder of woman found dead Monday in burning east Alabama motel

A man has been charged with murder in the killing of a woman found dead Monday in a burning east Alabama motel, authorities said Tuesday.

Miguel Alejandro Herrera Barajas, 40, was taken to the Etowah County jail on a murder charge in the death of Joanna Leigh Arevalo Becerra, said Gadsden police Sgt. Marcus Hill.

Becerra was found dead Monday in a room at the Roadway Inn Motel at 3909 W. Meighan Blvd.

The Gadsden police and fire departments were called to hotel about a structure fire.

The investigation found that Becerra’s death “was the result of foul play.”

Attalla police found Barajas after a Be On The Lookout notice was released to local agencies, Hill said.

Barajas is being held without bond.

Other charges in connection with the incident are possible once the investigation is completed, the sergeant said.

Gadsden police are probing the incident.
