Man charged with murder after dispute over $200 Birmingham locksmith job ends in father’s fatal shooting

A 62-year-old man has been charged in the weekend shooting death of a locksmith during a dispute over money at a Birmingham gas station.

Birmingham police on Monday said Michael Kermit Murray is charged with murder in the Saturday-night death of 36-year-old Darnell Michael Puidokas, who leaves behind a 12-year-old son.

Murray will be held without bond in the Jefferson County Jail.

The ordeal began Saturday evening when Puidokas performed a key service for Murray at one location.

Then, according to Puidokas’s family, both Murray and Puidokas had driven to the Chevron on Bessemer Road for Murray to use an ATM to get money to pay the locksmith.

It was there they got into an argument over the price.

Puidokas, who was from Michigan but currently lived in Birmingham, slapped Murray who then shot Puidokas, the victim’s family said.

The victim’s mother, Michelle Puidokas, said her god son was on the phone with Puidokas throughout the job, the argument and the shooting.

She said Murray went into the gas station to get the money and then came out but was short of what her son had told him the job would cost.

“Instead of handing my son the money, he tells my son, ‘Hand me the receipt,’’’ Michelle Puidokas said. “My son said, ‘I’m not handing you no receipt until you give me my money.’’’

It escalated from there, she said.

“The sad thing is my god son was begging him to leave and take the loss,’’ she said. “It was a $200 job.”

“He heard the gunshots and everything,’’ she said, “and then Darnell’s phone went dead.”

The victim’s brother, Pierre Blanding, is also a locksmith in Birmingham. He went to the Chevron as soon as he learned of the shooting.

“Pierre went up there and saw Darnell on the ground,’’ she said. “He did not leave his brother.”

West Precinct officers were dispatched to the scene at 6:10 p.m. Saturday and Puidokas was pronounced dead at 6:26 p.m.

Murray remained on the scene and called 911. He was taken to police headquarters where he was questioned by detectives and then booked into the Birmingham City Jail on a 48-hour hold.

Detectives presented the case to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office which issued the murder warrant Monday morning.

“It was pretty senseless,’’ said Officer Truman Fitzgerald said. “From the evidence I’ve observed, it went from zero to 100 quickly.”

“This is just another case of people turning to gunfire to solve simple disputes,’’ he said.

Puidokas’s close-knit family is devastated by the killing.

His sister, Jasmine Puidokas, could barely talk through her tears. “I loved him, I appreciated everything he did for me, and I’m going to miss him,’’ she said.

Michelle Puidokas said her son was lovable and had a good sense of humor. He was the second oldest of her five children.

“He loved everybody,’’ she said. “He was the rock of the family.”

“Why did he shoot him? He’s a cold-hearted killer,’’ she said. “Darnell did not deserve this.”
