Man charged with capital murder in shooting death of lifelong friend on Birmingham street

The suspect in the shooting death of his lifelong friend has now been formally charged.

Raheem White, 27, is charged with capital murder in the Tuesday slaying of 28-year-old Byron McNeal Jr.

Birmingham 911 received a call just before 4 p.m. that someone had been shot near the intersection of Second Street North and Sixth Avenue North.

Police officers were working nearby and quickly got on the scene.

McNeal was taken to UAB Hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

“”He was shot and killed by a lifelong friend due to an argument,’’ Police Chief Scott Thurmond said in a press conference earlier this week.

“This was the second argument the victim and suspect had had on this day at the same location,” the chief said.

Authorities have not disclosed the nature of the disagreement.

White’s family cooperated with the investigation and turned the suspect into police.

The charge is capital because investigators say the fatal shots were fired from a vehicle.

Court records show White is already awaiting trial on drug trafficking charges from 2023.

White, of Pleasant Grove, was booked into the Jefferson County Jail at 5:44 p.m. Thursday. He is being held without bond.
