Man charged with capital murder in Center Point area shooting
A suspect is charged with capital murder in the shooting death of another man in Center Point earlier this month.
Carlos Dion Harper, 23, is charged in the May 31 slaying of 24-year-old Quindell Javon Rhodes, according to court records made public Thursday. He is also charged with second-degree assault in the wounding of Quintez Lamar Rhodes, who was “struck with a pistol,’’ records state.
Harper was served the arrest warrants on Wednesday but has been in the Jefferson County Jail since June 2 on several failure to appear warrants on drug charges.
He is being held without bond.
Jefferson County sheriff’s deputies were notified at 9:18 p.m. that Wednesday that someone had been shot in the 500 block of Tupelo Way, said Lt. Joni Money.
Once on the scene, they found Quindell Rhodes suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. He was taken to UAB Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 10:19 p.m.
A motive in the case has not been disclosed. The charge is capital because the homicide victim was in a vehicle when he was fatally shot.
Harper was also arrested this month on charges of trafficking methamphetamine and fentanyl. Charging documents state he was in possession of more than one kilo but less than 10 kilos of a methamphetamine mixture.
Harper will make his first court appearance on the new charges Friday.
