Man charged in Kentucky murder jailed in Alabama after person on bike struck in police chase

Derrick Carroll, the second Owensboro, Kentucky man charged in the 2022 shooting death of a man, is currently incarcerated on other charges in Alabama.

Carroll, 30, was charged with murder in the June 13 death of John Leak Jr. outside Leak’s mother’s home. Damian M. Fields, 28, of Livermore, was also charged in Leak’s death.

Fields’ trial, which started April 18, ended Tuesday when jurors found Fields not guilty of complicity to murder, and to lesser charges of complicity to second-degree manslaughter and complicity to reckless homicide.

Commonwealth’s Attorney Bruce Kuegel said Carroll will be tried for charges in Alabama before returning to Daviess County.

“My detectives in the office have contacted Alabama,” Kuegel said. “They have a detainer on him, but (court officials) are not finished with him in Alabama.”

Carroll went to Alabama after June 13, 2022, when Leak was killed. Fields testified at trial he and Carroll went to Illinois the night of June 13, where Fields planned to visit relatives. The two later separated.

On June 28, Carroll was arrested in Limestone County, Alabama, after a police chase. Media reports of the incident say Carroll was charged with reckless endangerment, attempting to elude a police officer, drug trafficking, possession of a pistol by a violent felon, receiving stolen property and tampering with evidence.

According to media accounts, Carroll was with a woman in a vehicle when he fled through the cities of Priceville and Decatur, striking a person on a bicycle before being forced to stop.

A trial date for Carroll in Owensboro has not been set.

“He has been indicted, so there’s a warrant for the charges,” Kuegel said.

Officials in Alabama will contact Daviess County prosecutors when they have completed Carroll’s case, Kuegel said.
