Man charged in DUI crash that killed Birmingham woman whose vehicle was disabled on highway

A man has been charged in the January death of a Birmingham woman who was fatally struck on Elton B. Stephens Expressway.

Jairo Noe Antonio Hernandez, 33, is charged with manslaughter in the Jan. 8 death of 34-year-old Porcha Patrice Williams.

Charging documents against Hernandez made public Wednesday said he was under the influence of alcohol when he hit Williams.

The crash happened at 2:28 a.m. that Sunday on the expressway at the U.S. 31 exit ramp.

Authorities said Williams was the driver of a vehicle that became disabled in one of the traffic lanes. When she got out of her vehicle, she was struck and pronounced dead on the scene at 3:02 a.m.

Hernandez was booked into the Jefferson County Jail on Feb. 10 and released Tuesday after posting $30,000 bond.

Upon his release, according to court records, he was immediately taken into custody by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement on a deportation hold.

Jefferson County Deputy District Attorney Shawn Allen filed a motion requesting that Hernandez’s bond be revoked.

“If defendant’s bond is not revoked,’’ Allen wrote, “he will likely be deported prior to adjudication of this case.”

Jefferson County Circuit Judge Michael Street on Wednesday ordered Hernandez’s bond revoked.

Williams left behind two children and was remember as a “light’’ and an “amazing mother.”
