Man charged in 2022 deadly DUI crash at subdivision entrance
A man has been indicted in a 2022 fatal DUI crash in Calera.
Daniel Adam Hughes is charge in the July 20, 2022, death of 40-year-old Joel Spanick.
A Shelby County grand jury indicted Hughes, 28, on charges of reckless murder and DUI, said District Attorney Matt Casey on Monday.
The crash happened at 7:49 a.m. that Wednesday at Waterford on Highway 70. Spanick was preparing to pull out of his subdivision onto the highway when he was struck by Hughes’s vehicle, which had reportedly left the roadway.
Hughes, of Calera, remains held in the Shelby County Jail on bonds totaling $70,000.
The case was investigated by the Calera Police Department and the Shelby County Traffic Homicide Task Force.
If convicted, Hughes will face a range of punishment of 10 years to life on the reckless murder charge and up to one year on the DUI.
“I hope that situations like this will cause people to stop and consider before getting behind the wheel intoxicated,” Casey said.
