Man and woman killed in horrific head-on crash on Birmingham’s Bankhead Highway now identified

Authorities have released the names of two people killed in a head-on crash on Birmingham’s Bankhead Highway.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified the fatality victims as Britney Hill Jones, 34, and Demetris Lasalle Sanders, 51.

The wreck happened about 11:45 a.m. Monday in the 1500 block of Bankhead Highway, not far from Cherry Avenue and Family Dollar.

Jones, a Birmingham mother, was traveling northbound on Bankhead Highway in a Nissan Rogue when she was struck head on by a white Chevrolet Suburban driven by Sanders, of Center Point.

Both were pronounced dead on the scene at 12:12 p.m.

Witnesses said the Suburban crossed over into the northbound lane, first hitting one vehicle. That car was spun around by the impact, but the driver was OK.

The Suburban then continued traveling the wrong way in the northbound lane, hitting several other vehicles, including the Nissan Rogue.

A third person was taken to the hospital with unknown injuries.

The wreck shut down that portion of Bankhead Highway for more than three hours. Birmingham police are investigating.
