Man and woman killed in fiery crash in Alabaster

Two people were killed in a fiery crash Tuesday night in Alabaster.

Police Chief Curtis Rigney said officers about 7:15 p.m. received 911 calls of a reckless driver traveling at a high rate of speed on Smokey Road, which is also known as County Road 12.

At 7:20 p.m., the chief said, they received another call of a car on fire in the 2100 block of Smokey Road.

When officers arrived, they found the car engulfed in flames in a wooded area.

One of the occupants- a male – had been ejected. Police pulled him away from the burning vehicle. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

Alabaster firefighters extinguished the blaze. A female was then found dead inside the car.

Rigney said the vehicle was believed to be traveling at least 100 mph when it left the roadway and hit the trees.

Shelby County Coroner Lina Evans said the names are being withheld pending notification of family members but said she expects to release those names later today.
