Man and child shot in suspected drive-by in Mobile days after deadly interstate shooting
For the second time in less than a week, a child has been shot while riding in a vehicle in the Mobile area.
Mobile police said Friday the incident happened on Cottage Hill Road near Wildwood Drive.
Officers responded to the scene about 6:40 p.m. Thursday after being called to Springhill Medical Center for two gunshot victims.
Initial investigation determined the two victims — a 34-year-old man and 8-year-old child — were shot while riding in a vehicle on Cottage Hill. Unknown subjects fired multiple shots from an unknown vehicle into the victims’ vehicle.
The two victims arrived at the hospital via personal vehicle and were treated for what police described as non-life-threatening injures.
Thursday’s incident comes just three days after a 15-year-old girl and 9-year-old boy were both shot while riding in a vehicle on Interstate 165. The girl died in the shooting, while the 9-year-old remained hospitalized in stable condition as of Thursday afternoon. This was the second time the 9-year-old had been shot.
The person police believe was the intended target in that shooting, 18-year-old T’Marvin Ladryl Jones, was arrested Wednesday and charged with reckless endangerment and tampering with physical evidence.
Police say he has refused to cooperate with investigators. As of Friday morning, he remained in Mobile Metro Jail under total bond of $20,000.
Mobile County Sheriff Paul Burch said he believes the I-165 shooting is gang-related.
