Man and child missing after fishing in Midfield rock quarry
A search is underway after a man and a boy disappeared in a rock quarry in western Jefferson County.
Authorities were dispatched at 5:40 p.m. Saturday to Bessemer Avenue and Myrtle Avenue in Birmingham on a report of a person who fell in the water.
The address was updated to 1555 Hartman Industrial Boulevard in Midfield, which runs alongside cement and concrete manufacturer Holcim Birmingham Slag Plant.
Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service, Birmingham police, Midfield Fire and Rescue and Midfield police and the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene.
BFRS Battalion Chief Clay Hendon said when first responders arrived on the scene, they learned a child fell into the rock quarry reportedly while fishing.
An adult then jumped in after the boy.
“Neither of them resurfaced,” said Hendon.
“There were witnesses but all those witnesses left the scene before law enforcement arrived.”
The victims are reported to be ages 9 and 26, but authorities said that has not been positively confirmed.
Hendon said the witnesses reportedly also jumped in the water to try to help.
The area where the search is ongoing is a rock quarry with a holding pond.
“The reported spot where they’re telling us they went in the water is about 10 feet above the water,” Hendon said.
“The depth in that area is about 30 feet.”
Hendon said the water in that area is fairly clear on the surface but gets darker as it gets deeper.
The battalion chief said the area is private property.
Authorities said the area is known for swimming and fishing despite it being private land.
As of 7:15 p.m. the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office dive team was in the water and a drone was in the air.
“At this point it is probably a recovery because we’re at 1 ½ hours in the water,” he said.
Multiple friends and family are on the scene, visibly distraught.
