Man, 71, pointed lasers at police and motorists, built destructive devices, records state
A 71-year-old Shelby County man is facing numerous charges after authorities say he pointed lasers at law enforcement officers and motorists on busy South Shades Crest Road.
Jerry Lee Clarke, whose home was the scene of a massive search last week that shut down traffic, is also accused of manufacturing destructive devices and/or bacteriological weapons, according to court records made public Friday.
He is charged with three crimes related to the possession/manufacturing of a destructive device – all felonies.
The criminal complaint states Clarke combined artillery shells with explosive powdered and had remote detonators.
Authorities have previously said the devices were found to pose no threat.
He is also charged with two counts of harassment for pointing lasers at two police officers, and reckless endangerment for pointing lasers as passing motorists, which are misdemeanors.
Clarke was booked into the Shelby County Jail Thursday and remains held on bonds
Sheriff’s office criminal investigators and the Shelby County Drug Enforcement Task Force went to Clarke’s home in the 5100 block of South Shades Crest Road on Wednesday, June 18, to “carry a lawful court order.”
Charging documents state that on June 12, Clarke pointed the lasers at the two law enforcement officers. The reckless endangerment charge of allegedly pointing lasers at drivers happened on June 13, records state.
The three felony charges are from June 18, when lawmen descended on his home, and found the suspicious devices.
