Major airline changes pet policy
American Airlines is making it easier to travel with pets.
Late last month, American Airlines updated its pet policy to allow passengers to carry on pets as long as they are in pet carriers. The new policy also allows passengers who carry pets in pet carriers to have an additional carry-on luggage item.
The aircraft outlines the policy on its website. Passengers can only bring pets as carry-ons if they pay the carry-on fee and the pet stays in the carrier and under the seat in front of the passenger during the entire flight.
Passengers can only bring one additional item on board the flight in addition to their pet– a personal item, such as a purse or small handbag– or a carry on bag that meets requirements and fits in the overhead bin.
Earlier, travelers with pets were only allowed to bring a small personal item, that could fit under the seat if they were bringing their pet onboard, reports USA TODAY. Anything bigger than that, like a carry-on, was required to be checked for $35. Alternatively, owners could put their pet in the cargo hold if they wanted to bring a bigger item with them on the flight.
American Airlines allows passengers to travel with pets on flights up to 12 hours or flights to/ from:
- Within the 48 contiguous United States
- The U.S. and Canada
- Alaska
- Mexico
- Puerto Rico
- St. Croix
