Madison County sheriff: Avoid fatal helicopter crash site, notify officials if you find debris
The Madison County Sheriff’s Office is cautioning people to be alert for debris from yesterday’s helicopter crash of a UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter.
The helicopter crashed on a Madison County highway, killing two Tennessee National Guardsmen aboard the aircraft.
In a series of tweets, the sheriff’s office warned residents that debris could be scattered across areas near the crash site.
“If you locate any wreckage, please avoid the area and notify the Madison County Sheriff’s Office so our team of investigators can make contact with you,” the sheriff’s office stated. Authorities are warning not to touch or move the debris.
Anyone locating debris should call dispatch at (256) 722-7181.
The Tennessee National Guard said two of its soldiers were killed in the crash, which occurred during a routine training mission.
Authorities were dispatched to Burwell Road and Alabama 53 in Harvest at 3:01 p.m. Wednesday on a report of a crashed helicopter.
Traffic was closed today on Alabama 53 between Jeff Road and Douglas Road, as well as a stretch of highway between Research Park Boulevard and Jeff Road.
