Madison County man riding bicycle towed by riding lawnmower stuck and killed by car
A New Market man was killed Saturday when the bicyle he was riding – as it was being towed by a riding lawnmower – was struck by a car, according to troopers with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency. The operator of the lawnmower was also injured.
Jerry W. Hillis, 41, was killed when the Mongoose Rebel bicycle he was operating was struck by the 2003 Chevrolet Impala driven by a 57-year-old Huntsville man, according to an ALEA press release.
The crash happened at 3:20 p.m. Saturday on Arnold Road near Prospect Road, about five miles east of Hazel Green, in Madison County, troopers reported.
At the time of the crash the bicycle Hillis was riding was being towed by a Cub Cadet Super LT 1554 riding lawn mower driven by Samuel N. Bratcher, 48, of New Market, according to troopers. The mower was also struck by the Impala.
Hillis was thrown from the bicycle and was pronounced deceased at the scene, according to the ALEA press release. Bratcher was transported to Huntsville Hospital for medical treatment.
No other information about the crash. Troopers with ALEA’s Highway Patrol Division are continuing an investigation into the crash.
