Mac Jones ready to get to work with Bill O’Brien
New England Patriots quarterback Mac Jones will have an offensive coordinator in the 2023 season, and he’s looking forward to working with Bill O’Brien beginning on Monday.
“I think we’re all excited for this next year,” Jones told Steve Burton of WBZ-TV in Boston, “and it just starts with putting your head down and going to work. We’ve got a great group of guys, and it’s all about how you come together as a team — players, coaches, everybody. So I’m excited to work with him, and I know we all are. And it’s going to be a great year. We’ve just got to put the work in.”

Jones started every game as New England posted a 10-7 record and went to the postseason as a wild-card qualifier in his rookie season in 2021. In 2022, the Patriots went 8-9, with a 6-8 mark in games started by Jones, who missed three games because of an ankle injury.
As a rookie, Jones went to the Pro Bowl as he completed 352-of-521 passes for 3,801 yards with 22 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. In his second season, Jones completed 288-of-442 passes for 2,997 yards with 14 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.
New England dropped from sixth in the NFL in scoring in 2021 to 17th in 2022 after the departure of Josh McDaniels, who left his post as the Patriots offensive coordinator to become the Las Vegas Raiders head coach last offseason.
New England coach Bill Belichick did not name an offensive coordinator to replace McDaniels.
For the 2022 season, former Patriots special-teams coordinator, Alabama assistant coach and New York Giants head coach Joe Judge served as offensive assistant and quarterbacks coach, and former New England defensive coordinator and Detroit Lions head coach Matt Patricia called the plays, although his titles were senior football advisor and offensive-line coach.
In January, New England hired O’Brien as its offensive coordinator. He had held that position for the previous two seasons at Alabama.
O’Brien joined the Crimson Tide the season after Jones left Alabama. Jones was an All-American for the Tide’s undefeated CFP national championship team in 2020.
After the downturn in 2022, Jones has had an offseason during which he’s been the subject of trade rumors, his head coach declined to say that he had a firm hold on the QB job and his backup, Bailey Zappe, said if he got an opportunity to compete for the spot he would “take full advantage of it.”

But when asked about the offseason, Jones said: “It’s been good. I think it’s important to just evaluate everything. Obviously, a day like today, it takes your mind off football and you get to enjoy the kids. But I’ve definitely been giving it a lot, just like every year, and just super excited to get back with the guys here soon and get to work.”
Burton talked to Jones while the Patriots quarterback was visiting the Boys and Girls Club of Metro South in Brockton, Massachusetts, on Wednesday.
New England is scheduled to start its offseason program on Monday.
