LSU’s Walker Howard reportedly headed to transfer portal
Walker Howard, a 4-star quarterback recruit who made headlines last year for appearing in a viral video with a dancing LSU head coach Brian Kelly, plans to enter the NCAA transfer portal, according to multiple reports.
Howard, the son of former LSU quarterback Jamie Howard, played in two games as the Tigers’ third-string quarterback in 2022. The true freshman completed 2 of 4 passes for seven yards and also ran for 33 yards on six attempts, and will have four years of eligibility remaining.
Speaking to reporters after LSU’s 63-7 Citrus Bowl victory over Purdue, Kelly made it clear that Howard was behind returning starter Jayden Daniels and sophomore backup Garrett Nussmeier in the Tigers’ quarterback pecking order. LSU finished 10-4 in 2022, Kelly’s first season as head coach.
“There’s no quarterback controversy. Jayden is the No. 1 quarterback. Garrett will get an opportunity to compete though,” Kelly said, via 247 Sports. “The most important thing is that when you have two really good quarterbacks, you have to have an open mind. You can’t be close minded looking at two elite quarterbacks. What we’ve committed to is an open mind and an open process where you can go in and give you an opportunity to continue to grow. That’s gonna allow both of our quarterbacks and Walker [Howard] to continue to grow at LSU.”
That statement appeared to leave a limited role in 2023 for Howard, the No. 5 quarterback in the 2022 recruiting class, according to 247 Sports Composite. He led St. Thomas More High School in Lafayette to back-to-back state championships in 2019 and 2020.
However, Howard is best known for the video that he tweeted out in December 2021. The video shows Kelly and Howard standing back-to-back on a platform inside a room covered in LSU logos, with Howard twirling a football while Kelly dances awkwardly to Garth Brooks’ Tiger Stadium staple “Calling Baton Rouge.”
LSU also signed a quarterback in its 2023 class, 4-star recruit Rickie Collins of Baton Rouge’s Woodlawn High.
