LSU’s 3 permanent SEC opponents ‘all but set,’ per report

On the same day that Alabama coach Nick Saban let the cat out of the bag on the Crimson Tide’s permanent annual opponents in an SEC’s nine-game, division-less schedule, NOLA is reporting LSU’s three opponents are “all but set.”

NOLA.com, citing sources involved in the scheduling process, reports the Tigers will face Alabama, Ole Miss and Texas A&M on a permanent basis.

According to Sports Illustrated’s Ross Dellenger, the possibility still exists that the SEC will stick with an eight-game football schedule with one permanent rival and seven rotating games per year.

For what it’s worth, Dellenger also took to social media to speculate as to all of the SEC teams’ permanent opponents. His opponents matched NOLA’s report.

Saban told Sports Illustrated that Alabama’s opponents would be Auburn, Tennessee and LSU. While the Tide plays each every season, Saban said it would be unfair compared to other school’s opponents.

The SEC, per SI, is expected to choose a team’s three permanent opponents based on primary and secondary rivalries, geographical footprints as well as balance and parity.

The new format is expected to be approved later this spring and take effect when Texas and Oklahoma join the conference in 2024 — would include three permanent annual opponents and six rotating opponents each season.
