LSU’s Jayden Daniels breaks SEC total offense record

LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels set a new SEC record for total offense in a game in a 52-35 victory over Florida on Saturday night in Baton Rouge.

Daniels totaled 606 yards — 372 passing, 234 rushing — and accounted for five touchdowns as the Tigers improved to 7-3 overall, 5-2 in the SEC. He broke the league record of 585, set by Mississippi State’s KJ Costello vs. LSU in 2020.

Playing a week after leaving with a concussion in the fourth quarter of a loss to Alabama, Daniels also became the first player in FBS history to rush for 200 yards and pass for 350 in the same game. The Tigers totaled 701 yards offensively, the most ever allowed by the Gators.

Daniels scored on runs of 85 and 51 yards, and threw touchdowns of 37 and 7 yards to Brian Thomas and 6 yards to Noah Cain. In 10 games, he has passed for 3,174 yards and 30 touchdowns with just four interceptions and rushed for 918 yards and eight scores.

Thomas (6 catches, 150 yards) and Malik Nabers (6-132) both went over the 100-yard mark receiving for LSU. The Tigers also rushed for 329 yards in the game.

Graham Mertz threw for 311 yards and Trevor Etienne ran for three touchdowns in a losing effort for Florida, which falls to 5-5 overall, 3-4 in the SEC. The Gators need to beat either 16th-ranked Missouri or fourth-ranked Florida State to become bowl-eligible in Billy Napier’s second season.

LSU hosts Georgia State next Saturday before finishing up with Texas A&M on Nov. 25.
