Loxley police officer fatally shoots ‘suicidal’ 74-year-old man, sheriff’s office says
A Loxley police officer shot and killed a 74-year-old man authorities say pointed a gun at the officer Thursday evening.
The Baldwin County Major Crimes Unit was requested by Loxley police to investigate the shooting at the 13681 Highway 90. Police were called there shortly after 6 p.m. hours to check on “a suicidal subject,” the sheriff’s office said.
Officers found Glenn Dawson in a bedroom with two other people.
Dawson, the sheriff’s office said, was armed with a handgun, and would not comply with verbal commands to place his weapon down.
“Mr. Dawson then raised and pointed his handgun at one of the officers who in turn discharged his handgun, striking Dawson in the chest. Life-saving measures were taken immediately by the officers on the scene, but Glenn Dawson ultimately succumbed to his injuries a short time later,” a sheriff’s office statement read.
Loxley police asked the Baldwin County Major Crimes Unit to conduct an independent review of this incident using non-agency investigators, which is standard protocol in Baldwin County.
