Louisville QB Malik Cunningham headed to Senior Bowl

Louisville quarterback Malik Cunningham has accepted an invitation to the 2023 Reese’s Senior Bowl, game officials announced Wednesday.

Cunningham, a Montgomery native, becomes the sixth quarterback for this year’s game, set for Feb. 4 at Mobile’s Hancock Whitney Stadium. He joins Houston’s Clayton Tune, TCU’s Max Duggan, BYU’s Jaren Hall, Fresno State’s Jake Haener and Shepherd’s Tyson Bagent as signal callers for the annual all-star game and NFL draft showcase.

Tennessee’s Hendon Hooker will also participate in Senior Bowl week activities — such as team meetings and interviews with NFL scouts — but won’t practice or play in the game due to injury. Hooker, the SEC Offensive Player of the Year in 2022, suffered a torn ACL in his left knee in late November.

Cunningham (6-foot-1, 190 pounds) was a four-year starter for the Cardinals, and played five seasons overall after redshirting in 2017. The former Park Crossing High School standout passed for 9,660 yards and 70 touchdowns in his career, and added another 3,179 yards and 50 scores rushing.

Cunningham is in Los Angeles this week participating in the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl, which takes place on Saturday at the Rose Bowl. He’ll then travel to Mobile in time for Senior Bowl events to begin on Tuesday.

Cunningham’s addition comes on the same day that Georgia’s Stetson Bennett reportedly turned down a Senior Bowl opportunity. Outkick.com reported that the two-time national champion, viewed as a mid-to-late-round pick, will skip the all-star game circuit in order to prepare for the NFL combine and Georgia’s Pro Day.

The 2023 Reese Senior Bowl kicks off at 1:30 p.m. Feb. 4, with television coverage via NFL Network. For ticket information, visit SeniorBowl.com/tickets.
