Louisiana observes Not on Herb Day

The state of Louisiana observed Not on Herb Day on Tuesday after a proclamation by Gov. Jeff Landry.

The proclamation came after New Orleans Pelicans forward Herb Jones was recognized last week as a member of the NBA’s All-Defensive team for the 2023-24 season.

“We’re signing a proclamation on behalf of Herb Jones, unbelievable defensive player,” Landry said during an appearance at the state legislature to sign the proclamation. “It goes to show you that you can create stardom not just by scoring baskets, but by taking the ball away from those who are trying to score baskets.”

Jones’ recognition capped a campaign on behalf of the former Hale County High School and Alabama standout by New Orleans, which promoted a “Not on Herb” defensive motto throughout his third NBA season.

“What’s up, Gov. Landry?” Jones said in a video response recorded for the Pelicans. “I appreciate you recognizing today as Not on Herb Day. So thankful for you guys and all the Pels fans who have given me the support since I’ve been here, and I’ll continue to do my job in working hard and playing the right way for this city and this community and this organization.”

Jones was the only player whose regular position isn’t center who was a first-team selection on the All-Defensive team for the 2023-24 NBA season. The Miami Heat’s Bam Adebayo, Los Angeles Lakers’ Anthony Davis, Minnesota Timberwolves’ Rudy Gobert and San Antonio Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama were the other first-team selections.

Jones became the second Alabama alumnus to earn first-team recognition on the NBA’s All-Defensive team, which has been selected annually since 1969. He joined Charlotte Bobcats forward Gerald Wallace, who was chosen in the 2009-10 season.
