Los Angeles Chargers pick up former All-Pro from Alabama
The Los Angeles Chargers signed safety Eddie Jackson for their practice squad on Monday, the NFL team announced.
The Chargers added the former Alabama defensive back on the same day that they placed safety Marcus Maye on injured reserve. Maye sustained an ankle injury in Thursday night’s 34-27 victory over the Denver Broncos.
Jackson had been an NFL free agent since Nov. 23, when the Baltimore Ravens released him. Baltimore’s head coach is John Harbaugh. Los Angeles’ head coach is his brother, Jim Harbaugh.
Jackson signed with the Ravens on July 21 after spending the first seven seasons of his NFL career with the Chicago Bears.
In Baltimore’s first eight games in 2024, Jackson made four starts and played 323 defensive snaps, including all 69 in the Ravens’ 29-24 loss to the Cleveland Browns on Oct. 27.
In that game, Cleveland quarterback Jameis Winston found wide receiver Cedric Tillman open behind Jackson for a 38-yard touchdown pass with 59 seconds to play.
After that game, Jackson was a healthy scratch for a 41-10 victory over Denver on Nov. 3, played a season-low 16 snaps in a 35-34 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals on Nov. 7 and didn’t travel with the team to Pittsburgh for an 18-16 loss to the Steelers on Nov. 17 before being released.
The Chargers play the New England Patriots at noon CST Saturday at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts. A victory by Los Angeles would clinch a playoff spot.
Jackson entered the NFL as a fourth-round pick of the Bears in the 2017 draft. He became an immediate starter in Chicago and played at least 94 percent of the Bears’ defensive snaps in each of his first six seasons.
In 2018 and 2019, Jackson was chosen for the NFC Pro Bowl team, and he earned first-team All-Pro recognition in 2018.
Chicago released Jackson on Feb. 15 with one season remaining on a four-year, $58.4 million contract. He signed a one-year, $1.5 million contract that included $1 million in guaranteed money with the Ravens on July 21.
