Looking for honeybees? A Mobile woman has some to spare
Although honeybees are reported to be in decline – with potentially disastrous consequences if it continues, according to some sources – that’s not the case in Alabama, and definitely not the case in Betty Reed’s Mobile backyard.
Reed has more bees than she needs, and she’s having trouble getting them rehomed.
Last week, Reed’s daughter saw a swarm of bees, which led to the discovery of a beehive and a reserve of honey (Reed calls it a honeypot) in a tree in Reed’s backyard.
Even though the bees aren’t hurting anyone, and she says that she would like the honey from the tree, Reed still wants to get rid of the colony. She doesn’t want the bees to make their way into her house, nor does she want her pets harmed by the bees.
“I contacted everybody I know,” Reed says. “I posted on Facebook. Nobody’s interested. Nobody wants these bees.”
