Longtime Davidson girls basketball coach Charlie Shipp taking over new program
Charlie Shipp is not done coaching yet.
The longtime Davidson High girls basketball coach is taking over the program at St. Luke’s Episcopal in Mobile.
“I’m real excited about it,” Shipp said Monday. “It’s something different, uncharted waters. I’m not real familiar with the program, but I’m excited to get started.”
Shipp announced near the end of the basketball season in February that he would likely not return as the Warriors’ head coach after 25 seasons. He will officially retire from public school teaching later this month.
“It was just time for a change,” Shipp said. “The kids at Davidson were great. The parents were great. There was no problem with basketball. I guess the wear and tear of getting up everyday and going to work just took a bit of a toll.
“The position at St. Luke’s is part time, and that is what I was looking for. I had some opportunities in Mississippi, but this just seems like a better fit.”
Shipp said officials at St. Luke’s texted him to see if he knew of any coaches who might be interested in leading the Wildcats’ girls program.
“I called them back and said that I would be,” he said. “I met with them. I took them my resume, but they said they didn’t need it. They offered me the job, and I took it.”
Shipp won 610 games at Davidson and led his team to six final fours. He said he would meet with his St. Luke’s team next Monday and set up a spring training schedule and a plan for summer workouts.
“It’s going to be interesting,” he said. “The schedule for next season is already made out. We will be playing a lot of smaller schools that I don’t know much about whereas I’ve been used to playing the McGills and Murphys of the world, and we know what each other likes to do. I’ll have to familiarize myself with some different schools in the area.”
Shipp said his goals won’t change.
“Get to Birmingham,” he said. “That’s the goal. We will get a good plan ready and put it in place. That’s our goal every year. We fell short the last few years at Davidson.”
St. Luke’s athletic director Meredith Donald said the school was “thrilled” to have Shipp leading the girls program.
“He brings a wealth of knowledge and a strong commitment to developing student athletes on and off the court,” she said. “We are excited about the future of our program under his leadership.”
