Longshoremen’s union and CSA agree to mediation, holding off strike

A potential work stoppage at the Port of Mobile has been avoided for now, as both sides have agreed to work with federal mediators.

On Wednesday night, the International Longshoremen’s Association Local 1410 announced they had agreed to mediate their ongoing conflict with CSA Equipment Company, a stevedoring contractor in the port, averting a potential strike.

“We’re making the attempt one more time, with the federal mediator,” Mark Bass, president of the ILA Local 1410, said.

The two parties have agreed to work with the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service (FMCS) to mediate the disagreement and agree to a new contract. Last week, the Lede reported that Local 1410 had voted to strike CSA operations, after union membership voted not to accept the company’s contract offer in September.

Working with a mediator averts a strike for now—but Bass says that, if the union’s demands are not met in mediation, then Local 1410 will move forward with a strike.
