Local business owner JJ Thomas is running for Homewood city council, Ward 2

JJ Thomas, a business owner and longtime community volunteer is running for Homewood City Council for Ward 2.

Thomas’ campaign platform focuses on improving financial management, public safety, infrastructure, city communications and development that preserves the neighborhood character of Homewood.

“Next year, Homewood turns 100 years old. It’s a milestone worth celebrating and a moment to ask: what kind of city do we want to be for the next hundred years?” Thomas said in a statement.

“We have potential. We have opportunities. But with growth has come real challenges—aging infrastructure, rising safety demands and a new form of government that calls for steady, experienced leadership.”

Thomas is the founder and CEO of Class Action Capital, a firm that served more than 8,000 clients in multiple countries.

In Homewood, he is co-owner of Slice Pizza & Brew and developed The Edge, a dining and entertainment space.

He also previously taught entrepreneurial finance as an adjunct professor at the University of Alabama’s Culverhouse College of Business.

If elected, Thomas said he plans to use his business management experience to improve city operations.

“I’ve built companies, led teams, and solved problems at scale but what matters most is the ability to listen, lead with integrity and put families first,” Thomas said in a statement. “This isn’t about me. It’s about you and your family, about safe streets, great schools and city government you can count on.”

Alongside his professional experience, Thomas also volunteers in Homewood. Thomas serves on the boards of the Homewood Chamber of Commerce, Homewood Athletic Foundation, and Homewood Helps.

Thomas and his family are also active members of Homewood Community Church.

The Homewood municipal election is Aug. 26. Voters will elect four councilors, instead of 11, and a mayor who will serve as council president to increase efficiency within city government.

Thomas is running against Nick Sims, who was elected to council in 2020 representing Ward 3, for the Ward 2 seat.

“We don’t just need leaders who can respond to problems—we need leaders who can help prevent them,” Thomas said in a statement. “I’m committed to protecting what makes Homewood special while helping us grow wisely and sustainably.”
