Live updates: Hugh Freeze chats with reporters after tight Cal win, previewing Samford
It’s good to be home.
Auburn escaped back on the red-eye across the country Sunday morning with a 14-10 win over Cal in an ugly, sloppy performance on the offensive side of the ball, but a wildly clutch day on defense.
Auburn will find it much easier to regroup and analyze this film coming off a win. This week, Auburn gets its final tune-up before SEC play as Samford comes to Jordan-Hare Stadium for Homecoming weekend.
Hugh Freeze will address reporters in his weekly Monday press conference beginning around 11 a.m. CT. When that begins, make sure to refresh this page for updates.
– “Obviously extremely happy to get out of there with a win against another Power 5 opponent,” Hugh Freeze said about Auburn’s win over Cal this weekend. He said given Auburn’s high number of turnovers and low number of first downs, Aubrun was fortunate to win.
– Freeze said no one quit believing that Auburn could win that game even through struggles.
– “Offense was awful,” Freeze said. Mentions that by Auburn’s first possession of the third quarter, Auburn had only run 25 plays on offense.
– Freeze said that the QB rotation Saturday isn’t what he wants it to look like going forward, but Auburn just had no momentum and they needed to find something. He said he needs Payton Thorne to play better more consistently.
– Freeze said Auburn only called three deep shots in the game. He wished he could have called more. But Cal’s defense was tough to do much against. Auburn’s receivers didn’t win enough battles.
– Freeze said he called three plays during the game. He said its hard sometimes to not be able to call more plays. But said Auburn shot itself in the foot so many times. He said he called the play that led to Auburn’s touchdown pass to Rivaldo Fairweather.
– “That game went nothing like I expected, which is good and bad I guess,” Freeze said.
– Freeze said Auburn didn’t call enough RPOs. So he doesn’t have much to say with regard to RPO decision-making that has been a topic throughout the QB battle. He mentions that Payton Thorne was just inconsistent as a whole during the game.
– Larry Nixon II had surgery on his wrist, Hugh Freeze said. That means both Austin Keys and Nixon, who plays the same position, have had hand/wrist surgery during a one-week span.
– Freeze mentions other Auburn injuries. He said its too early to tell if Nehemiah Pritchett and Donovan Kaufman will be able to play against Samford this coming Sunday. Mentions J.D. Rhym still working back, too.
– “Jalen McLeod makes us different when he’s playing,” Freeze said.
– “The stats are what they are. They performed. They stopped the run,” Freeze said on his run defense improvement from UMass.
