Live updates from Wednesday’s Class 7A championship game

Class 7A No. 1 Central-Phenix City tries to end Thompson’s four-year reign as state champions tonight at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa.

Mark Freeman’s Thompson team (11-1) has won seven straight games since its only loss of the season to Class 6A finalist Clay-Chalkville. The Warriors have outscored the competition 463-122 this season. Freeman is going for his 11th overall state title as a head coach.

Central is looking for its first state title since 2018. Patrick Nix’s team has outscored its competition 535-145 this season. Nix won two previous state titles at Pinson Valley.

A lot of star power in this one on both sides, including recent Auburn flip Cameron Coleman, QB Andrew Alford and Alabama commits Isaia Faga and Red Morgan for the Red Devils and QB Trent Seaborn, DB Anquon Fegans and Auburn DB commit Kaleb Harris.

6:45 PM, The goat? Thompson head coach Mark Freeman is going for his 11th state title overall tonight. He has won the last four as the Warriors head coach along with two at Spanish Fort and four at AISA Bessemer Academy.

5:21 PM, Heisman finalist in the house: Oregon QB and former Auburn QB Bo Nix here in Tuscaloosa tonight to support his father, Patrick Nix, and Central-Phenix City. Bo is one of four Heisman finalists who will be in New York this weekend.

5:15 PM, The Red Devils are here: Undefeated and No. 1-ranked Central-Phenix City has arrived at Bryant-Denny Stadium.
