Major stars take the floor today as the AHSAA state basketballs semifinals roll into Day 3 at the BJCC’s Legacy Arena.

The Hazel Green girls, two wins from an unprecedented seventh straight state title, open the day against Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa. Mr. Basketball frontrunner Caleb Holt and Buckhorn take on surging Helena and the Fairfield and Valley boys battle in a matchup of the top two teams in Class 5A.

9:14 AM, Surprise! Hillcrest leads Hazel Green 16-6 after one quarter. Patriots are 4-of-5 from 3-point range.

9:09 AM, Unafraid: Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa is certainly not wilting under Hazel Green’s reputation. Patriots off to a 13-4 lead with 2:41 left in the first quarter after back-to-back 3s by Blakely Nixon and Jareah Branch.

9:02 AM, Quick TO: Hazel Green struggling a bit early handling Hillcrest’s press. Tim Miller takes a timeout. Still, Patriots lead is just 2-0 with 6:17 left in the first quarter.

8:47 AM, Spreading the love: Hazel Green has beaten six different teams in the finals the last six years. The Trojans’ title wins have come over Huffman, Oxford, Carver-Montgomery, McAdory, Opelika and Ramsay.

8:35 AM, Here we go: Eight more semifinal games on tap for Day 3. It starts with the Hazel Green girls against Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa. Trojans looking to extend their record streak of consecutive state titles to seven. Tim Miller’s team is 29-4. Hillcrest is 27-7.
