Live updates from Thursday’s Class 1A, 3A, 5A state title games

Two teams have a chance to repeat as state champions today in Day 2 of the AHSAA Super 7.

Leroy goes for its second straight 1A state title at 3 p.m. against Coosa Christian. The Bears have returned to the title game despite the mid-season departure of head coach Jason Massey, who was deployed. In the nightcap, Ramsay goes for a repeat 5A title against Mark Hudspeth and upstart Gulf Shores. That game kicks at 7 p.m.

And the day stars with an unbeaten 3A matchup between Mobile Christian and Madison Academy. Check back frequently for updates and highlights on all the games.

11:06 AM, Coin toss: Madison Academy wins the toss and wants the ball. Mustangs will receive to start Day 2. Ken Cherry will be on the field first today.

10:51 AM, Title history: Mobile Christian is looking for its first AHSAA state championship. Ronnie Cottrell’s team played for the championship in 2016 and 2019, losing to Piedmont both years. Madison Academy won three straight titles from 2012-2014.

10:42 AM, Running wild: Should be a matchup of good running backs this morning. Mobile Christian’s PJ Brown has rushed for 1,783 yards and 22 TDs on 189 carries. Madison Academy’s Ken Cherry has been even better, rushing for 2,709 yards and 42 TDs on 182 carries.

10:25 AM, The first matchup: Mobile Christian and Madison Academy are both 14-0. The Leopards have outscored the competition 587-124. The Mustangs have outscored their competition 691-192. Both won close semifinal games — Mobile Christian defeating St. James 34-30 and Madison Academy defeating Geraldine 48-43.

9:30 AM, Is NIL coming to high schools in Alabama? An Alabama state representative has filed a bill that would allow high school athletes to make money off of their image. The legislation, HB25, sponsored by Rep. Jeremy Gray, D-Opelika, would be a name, image and likeness (NIL) bill for high school athletes. Read about the bill.
