Lions expect Jahmyr Gibbs to carry the load on Sunday

After missing the previous two games because of a hamstring injury, Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs will be back in action against the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday.

The Lions would prefer to ease the former Alabama ball-carrier back into the game, Detroit coach Dan Campbell said, but they won’t be able to do that with the rookie.

The Lions will play on Sunday without their top running back, David Montgomery, who has been sidelined by a rib injury since Detroit’s 20-6 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last week.

The Lions’ No. 3 running back, Craig Reynolds, also appears on this week’s injury report with toe and hamstring issues. He didn’t practice on Wednesday, was a limited participant on Thursday and Friday and has a questionable designation for Sunday’s game.

“Certainly, I think he’s going to need to take the load of it,” Campbell said about Gibbs’ outlook for Sunday. “We’re just going to have to see where he’s at. I’d like to say we want to be careful with him, but the reality of it is we need him, so we’ll go as far as he can take us here, trying to be as smart as we can, but he’s got to go. He’s ready.”

On Friday, when he had his first full practice of the week, Gibbs agreed he was ready to play.

“The training staff did a great job of helping me prepare for this game,” Gibbs said, “and I feel good.”

Montgomery has run for 385 yards and six touchdowns on 94 carries and caught six passes for 66 yards in the 2023 season.

Gibbs has 179 yards on 39 rushing attempts and 14 receptions for 70 yards.

When Montgomery missed the third game of the season because of a thigh injury, Gibbs reached career highs with 80 yards on 17 carries in a 20-6 victory over the Atlanta Falcons.

Campbell said the game plan doesn’t change much with the change of running backs.

“Ultimately we’re going to keep what we do well, and what our O-line does well, our tight ends,” Campbell said, “because we don’t think he’s some, ‘Hey, you just got to get on the perimeter, he’s not an inside runner.’ We don’t believe that, so we’re keeping the identity of what we do and the core of what we do in the run game, so that won’t really change.”

Gibbs joined Detroit from Alabama as the 12th choice in the NFL Draft on April 27.

“I’m just excited to get back out there,” Gibbs said. “I missed the last two weeks. It felt weird missing those two games, so I’m just happy to be back and go back out there with my teammates.”

The Lions and Ravens will square off at noon CDT Sunday at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore.
