Lions cornerback Carlton Davis to miss the rest of the regular season
The Detroit Lions placed cornerback Carlton Davis on injured reserve on Tuesday. That will keep the former Auburn standout off the field for the rest of the regular season, but Lions coach Dan Campbell did not rule out his return if Detroit can make another playoff run.
Davis sustained a fractured jaw in the Lions’ 48-42 loss to the Buffalo Bills on Sunday. The NFL’s injured-reserve rules require a stay of at least four games, and Detroit has only three games remaining on its regular-season schedule.
While the Lions have been beset by major injuries, Campbell didn’t see Davis’ setback as season-ending.
“Not sure yet on that one,” Campbell said on Monday about how long Davis might be out. “Not sure how long that’s going to be.”
The four-game stay would require Davis to miss at least one postseason game.
The Lions reached the NFC Championship Game last season and already have clinched another postseason spot.
Detroit acquired Davis in a trade with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on March 13. A second-round draft pick in 2018, Davis had spent his entire career with the Bucs.
Davis and rookie Terrion Arnold are the Lions’ regular cornerbacks. Davis had two interceptions this season, and quarterbacks had only a 77.0 rating when passing to targets covered by Davis in 2024.
During his Monday press conference, Campbell said he and defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn had been discussing how to deal with Davis’ absence, including moving slot corner Amik Robertson into Davis’ spot and shifting safety Brian Branch to the slot, where he played last season as a rookie.
The Lions play the Chicago Bears at noon CST Sunday at Soldier Field in Chicago in an NFC North game.
