Lighting issues at Coleman Coliseum cause early stoppage in Auburn-Alabama game

Wednesday night’s highly anticipated men’s basketball matchup between the eighth-ranked Auburn Tigers and the Alabama Crimson didn’t get off without a hitch.

Shortly after Auburn won the tip to open the game, Auburn senior Johni Broome drilled a 3-pointer to quickly put the Tigers out front and stifle the home crowd some. However, the officials would blow the game dead shortly after, sending both teams to their respective benches due to a lighting issue at Coleman Coliseum.

Instead of the overhead lighting flipping on after both teams’ starting lineups were introduced, both teams took to the hardwood with Alabama’s red-colored lighting still illuminating the floor.

After just 29 seconds of game play had expired, the game’s officials were forced to stop the game until the lighting situation was resolved.

As both the Tigers and Crimson Tide’s players returned to their benches, fans of both teams broke out into their respective cheers.

Wednesday night’s delay lasted 16 minutes before the lights eventually flipped back on, albeit a bit dimmer than usual. Members of the ESPN broadcast wondered if Wednesday evening’s thunderstorms in Tuscaloosa were reason for the electrical issues.

Following the fix, officials granted both teams a two-minute warm-up period, which was followed by the game picking up where it left off following Broome’s left-wing 3-pointer.
