Libs of TikTok: ‘Illegal’ Alabama man responsible for ‘Biden’s border bloodbath’ despite dropped murder charge

An influential social media account popular with conservatives portrayed an Alabama man charged with murder as an “illegal” partly responsible for “Biden’s border bloodbath” even after charges were dropped against the suspect.

“BREAKING: Illegal arrested for m*rder in Alabama,” Libs of TikTok posted Monday to X, the social media site formerly known as Twitter.

“Walter Antonio Escorcia-Gomez is in our country illegally and was just arrested for a m*rder that took place in 2023 when a 33-year-old man was shot dead.”

The tweet used the hashtag #bidensborderbloodbath.

Libs of TikTok, created by former New York real estate agent Chaya Raichik in 2021, has 3 million followers on X. It became a staple of the far-right media diet during the COVID-19 pandemic as it spread coronavirus conspiracy theories before expanding into transphobia and other hot-button conservative culture war issues.

Raichik is listed in the Southern Poverty Law Center’s Extremist Files, a compilation of groups and figures the SPLC views as “prominent extremists and extremist organizations.”

Escorcia-Gomez was arrested last Thursday morning in connection to a killing on Nov. 21 in the 3900 block of Cobb Road. A police officer called to Huntsville Hospital recognized Escorcia-Gomez, an assault victim, as the murder suspect from November.

In a court filing, prosecutors recommended charges be dropped after they “obtained statements and information” indicating he was “not guilty.”

WHNT on Tuesday quoted Tim Douthit, chief trial attorney for the Madison County District Attorney’s office, as saying that Escorcia-Gomez’s statement, coupled with eyewitness statements and video evidence, appeared to show he was acting in self defense.

“Mr. Ramirez had threatened to kill him and pulled out what appeared to be a firearm and then Mr. Escorcia-Gomez shot him,” Douthit said.

As of late Tuesday afternoon, Escorcia-Gomez’s mugshot and the X post remained on the Libs of TikTok account.

Local media reports did not identify Escorcia-Gomez’s immigration status, but Madison County jail records show that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement placed a hold on him, indicating that they believe he violated federal immigration law.

AL.com asked Libs of TikTok if it would be updating its X post to indicate charges were dropped against Escorcia-Gomez or if it was deleting the post but did not hear back.
