Level 1 risk for severe weather in Alabama on Thursday
Isolated severe storms will be possible across a large part of Alabama on Thursday.
NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center has added a Level 1 out of 5 risk for severe weather for Thursday for all of south and most of central Alabama.
A Level 1 risk means that isolated severe storms will be possible. The National Weather Service will be watching out for wind gusts as high as 60 mph and large hail. A tornado is not as likely but can’t be completely ruled out.
Storms will be possible through the day on Thursday, but the most likely time for stronger storms will be Thursday afternoon into the evening hours.
There are details in the forecast that still need to be resolved. The weather service said there is a chance that a cluster of rain and storms could develop and move across parts of the Gulf Coast earlier in the day on Thursday, which could affect the threat for storms farther north in Alabama. However, that scenario could also not materialize.
The threat for storms could linger into Friday before the system moves out of Alabama. More unsettled weather is expected over the upcoming weekend, with more rain possible.
As of now, severe weather isn’t anticipated in Alabama after Thursday.
