Lendeborg dominant as UAB tops Tulsa in AAC matchup

Forward Yaxel Lendeborg continued establishing himself as one of the best and most complete players in college basketball on Wednesday night with a dominant 28 points, 13 rebounds, six assists, four blocks and two steals in UAB’s 78-68 win over Tulsa.

The Blazers improved to a 13-8 record on the season and a 6-2 conference record, getting a much-needed win after their big loss to Memphis on Sunday afternoon.

In what’s been an up-and-down season for UAB in terms of three-point shooting, the Blazers hit nine of 22 of their attempts from deep, good for a 41 percent rate. Guard Tyren Moore hit a team-high three from beyond the arc on eight attempts and was third in scoring for the Blazers with nine points.

Starting point guard Ja’Borri McGhee was another highlight for Andy Kennedy’s squad, scoring 14 points on a night where only two Blazers cracked double digit scoring.

UAB’s perimeter defense has slowly but surely improved this season, only allowing six made shots from deep on 15 attempts. Concern still looms, however, as Tulsa had plenty of open looks, but failed to cash in. The Golden Hurricanes’ Keaton Willis, a near 40 percent three-point shooter, was ice cold to start this game, missing his first five attempts from long range. He had similar opportunities late though and caught fire in the last quarter of the game, hitting four of his last five three-point attempts to pull Tulsa back into the game.

UAB’s next contest comes against Charlotte at Bartow Arena on Feb. 1 at 1 p.m.
