Legendary rock star has cancer surgery, band postpones tour dates: ‘I’ve much more to sing’

Heart has postponed the rest of its tour dates for 2024, including a show in Alabama, while its lead singer recovers from cancer surgery.

Ann Wilson, 74, a founding member of the classic rock band, released a statement on Tuesday via Heart’s publicist, saying she had a successful surgery but will undergo chemotherapy and is taking the rest of the year off to recover. No other details were available, and Wilson’s statement said she wouldn’t elaborate on her heath issues in a public way.

Wilson’s full statement says:

“Dear friends, I underwent an operation to remove something that, as it turns out, was cancerous.

“The operation was successful & I’m feeling great but my doctors are now advising me to undergo a course of preventive chemotherapy & I’ve decided to do it. And so my doctors are instructing me to take the rest of the year away from the stage in order to fully recover.

“To the ticket buyers, I really do wish we could do these gigs. Please know that I absolutely plan to be back on stage in 2025. My team is getting those details sorted & we’ll let you know the plan as soon as we can.

Thank you all for the support. This is merely a pause. I’ve much more to sing.

“Love, Ann Wilson

“Respectfully, this is the last public statement l’d like to make on the matter.”

Heart’s publicist also said dates on the band’s “Royal Flush” tour would be rescheduled, and a press release encouraged fans to hold onto their tickets for the rescheduled dates. “More information to be announced in the coming weeks,” the release said.

Heart, led by Nancy Wilson and her sister, guitarist Ann Wilson, 70, was set to perform on Nov. 13 at the Legacy Arena at the BJCC in Birmingham, with Jason Bonham’s Led Zeppelin Evening as the opening act. Tickets for the Birmingham concert went on sale in early April via Ticketmaster. The show was still listed on the Ticketmaster website on Tuesday afternoon, with seats priced at $31-$319, plus service charges.

The Birmingham show was part of Heart’s “Royal Flush Tour,” which started April 20 in Greenville, South Carolina, and was due to end Dec. 15 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Heart’s plans for this year included more than 80 shows, with concerts booked throughout the United States, Canada and Europe. It was an extensive agenda for Heart — famed for 1970s and ‘80s hits such as “Magic Man,” ‘Crazy on You,” “Barracuda,” “These Dreams,” “Alone,” What About Love” and more — traveling on what a publicist said was the band’s first concert trek in five years.

Heart has 15 studio albums to its credit, 1975-2016, including blockbuster records such as “Dreamboat Annie” (1975), “Magazine” (1977), “Little Queen” (1977), “Dog and Butterfly” (1978), “Heart” (1985) and “Bad Animals” (1987). The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2013.

Ann and Nancy Wilson are best known as the prime movers of Heart, although both have pursued solo projects over the years. Ann Wilson, for example, recorded much of her 2022 album, “Fierce Bliss,” at FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals.
