Legendary musician cancels concert after coming out of retirement
Music legend Paul Simon canceled two shows in Philadelphia due to “intense back pain,” during his post-retirement tour this past weekend.
Simon canceled concerts last Saturday and Sunday. The singer-songwriter, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee and first half of the legendary duo Simon & Garfunkel, plans to undergo surgery so he can continue his remaining 2025 tour dates according to a recent statement on his Instagram.
“Regretfully, Paul Simon must cancel two shows tonight June 28 and tomorrow night June 29 at Philadelphia’s Academy of Music,” the statement said. “Paul has been struggling with chronic and intense back pain. Today it became unmanageable and demands immediate attention.
“Unfortunately, we have to cancel these shows at this time, as we don’t have the ability to reschedule them. However, we are hopeful after this minor surgical procedure which has been scheduled in the next few days, Paul will be able to complete the tour as well as look into returning to make up these dates.”
Fans who purchased tickets for the canceled shows will be automatically refunded.
Simon, 83, is a 16-time Grammy winner and a two-time member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, inducted once with Simon & Garfunkel in 1990 and as a solo artist in 2001.
Some of his most famous hits include “The Sound of Silence,” “Bridge over Troubled Water,” “Mrs. Robinson,” “Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard,” “50 Ways to Leave Your Lover,” “Kodachrome,” and “Graceland.”
Simon retired in 2018, thanking his fans for a fulfilling career.
“I feel the travel and time away from my wife and family takes a toll that detracts from the joy of playing. I’d like to leave with a big thank you to the many folks around the world who’ve come out to watch me play over the last 50 years,” Simon said in a statement at the time. “I am very grateful for a fulfilling career and, of course, most of all to the audiences who heard something in my music that touched their hearts.”
In February, the singer announced his return to the stage for the “Paul Simon in Concert: A Quiet Celebration,” tour, which began with a show in April in New Orleans.
The cancellation comes more than halfway through the 60 scheduled concerts, Simon’s first road tour since retiring due to significant hearing loss, according to Syracuse.com.
There are 15 dates left on Simon’s tour schedule. Simon is scheduled to perform July 7 in Long Beach followed by a five-night stint July 9 through 16 in Los Angeles.
