Legendary Motown group member put in straitjacket when he tells hospital who he is, lawsuit claims

The Four Tops singer Alexander Morris is suing a Michigan hospital for, he said, not believing he was in the group.

According to TheWrap, Morris claims he was racially profiled and doctors assumed he was mentally ill when he told them he was in the Four Tops, instead of treating “his clear symptoms of cardiac distress.”

He was taken off of oxygen and a white security guard, per the report, told him to “sit his Black ass down” at one point, according to the lawsuit, filed Monday in federal court and reviewed by TheWrap.

Per the report, doctors took him off oxygen and put him in a straitjacket. He continued to struggle to breathe but was denied more oxygen.

Morris’ wife tried to persuade a guard he was not delusional, but she was ignored, according to the report.

The staff realized the mistake only when he played them footage of him performing with the group at the Grammy Awards.

In April 2023, Morris was transported to Ascension Macomb Oakland Hospital’s ER for chest pains, according to the suit. He has a history of heart disease. Morris claims when he shared he was a member of the Four Tops with the doctor, the decision was made to remove him from oxygen and seek a psych evaluation.

He was later diagnosed with a heart attack that could require a heart transplant, as well as pneumonia. He also had three seizures while at the hospital.
