Legendary boxer reveals sudden death of son
Boxing legend Roy Jones Jr. and his family are mourning the loss of his son, DeAndre.
The Pensacola native, 55, posted a statement on social media Monday, saying, “Unfortunately, my son DeAndre took his life on Saturday.”
“I’m so thankful that God allowed me to come home Friday night to spend the last night of his life with me and the family,” Jones posted. “I know a lot of people are going through tough times right now, but nothing is worth taking your own life.
“God gives it and God should be the one to take it away.”
Jones thanked fans for their support and requested privacy.
Jones, who fought Mike Tyson in an eight-round exhibition in 2020, last fought in 2018, and was considered the top “pound-for-pound” boxer in the world back in the 1990s. At various times over the years, he has held titles in the middleweight, super middleweight, light heavyweight, cruiserweight and heavyweight divisions.
