Legacy Tour: New Edition, Keith Sweat, Teddy Riley coming to Birmingham
New Edition closed out 2022 with “The Culture Tour.” Soon, the Grammy-nominated, multi-platinum-selling group will be back on the road for a new 30-city tour.
Late last year, the R&B icons and independent concert production company The Black Promoters Collective announced the “Legacy Tour” a 30-city tour with a lineup that includes a New Jack Swing reunion with Keith Sweat, Tank, and the original members of Guy—Teddy Riley, Aaron Hall, and Damion Hall.
The “Legacy Tour” starts on Thursday, March 9 in Columbia, S.C., and ends on Sunday, April 30 in Tampa, Fla. The tour will come to Birmingham on Saturday, March 11 for a stop at the Legacy Area at the BJCC. Tickets range from $59.50 to $179.50 before fees and are available via Ticketmaster.
Comprised of Ronnie DeVoe, Bobby Brown, Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, Ralph Tresvant, and Johnny Gill, New Edition hit the scene in 1983 with their debut album “Candy Girl.” The group went on to win a number of awards, including BET’s “Lifetime Achievement” award. BET’s The New Edition Story, which debuted in 2017 and attracted more than 29 million viewers, is one of the network’s highly-watched biopics.
Teddy Riley ushered in the New Jack Swing genre, which included the formation of the group Guy in 1987. While Guy disbanded after their second album, Riley has a storied production career that includes work with Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Bobby Brown, Usher, and Mary J. Blige. He was instrumental in the rise of Bobby Brown’s solo career, creating the megahit “My Prerogative.” The “Legacy Tour” will be the first time the group has come together to tour in more than fifteen years.
Keith Sweat entered the charts in 1987 with his debut solo album, “Make It Last Forever,” giving the world its first New Jack Swing Billboard Hot 100 hit, “I Want Her.” The song, produced by Riley and Sweat, became the most successful R&B song in 1988 on the Billboard “Hot R&B Songs” chart.
Tank, a multi-Grammy-nominated platinum-selling singer, songwriter and producer, has a career spanning more than 20 years. Tank recently celebrated the re-release of his first three albums: Force of Nature, One Man, and Sex, Love & Pain. Tank has written and produced for some of the industry’s biggest names, including Beyonce, Chris Brown, Aaliyah, Alicia Keys, and Fantasia. His TV and film credits include Lifetime’s “Seven Deadly Sins: Lust, HBO’s “Togetherness,” and the network’s “The New Edition Story” and “The Bobby Brown Story.”
