LeBron James, Michael Jordan, NBA world mourns Jerry West’s death

Jerry West, known as the logo for the NBA, died Wednesday. He was 86 years old.

West, a 14-time All-Star, won eight championships as an executive, helping assemble some of the greatest teams to ever step on the court, including uniting Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal on the Los Angeles Lakers.

The Los Angeles Clippers said West died Wednesday with his wife, Karen, by his side.

West was nicknamed “Mr. Clutch” for his late-game exploits as a player, and he won both NBA and Olympic titles. He was an All-Star in all 14 of his NBA seasons and won the 1972 championship with the Lakers. West was later the general manger of eight Lakers championship teams.

The reaction to his death was immediate.

“Will truly miss our convos my dear friend,” LeBron James posted on “X,” the social media platform formerly known as Twitter. “My thoughts and prayers goes out to your wonderful family! Forever love Jerry! Rest in Paradise my guy!”

Michael Jordan also texted Stephen A. Smith a reaction to West’s death.

“I am so deeply saddened at the news of Jerry’s passing. He was truly a friend and a mentor. Like an older brother to me. … Rest in Peace, Logo.”
