LB coach Robert Bala teases departure, thanks Alabama for ‘opportunity’

Amid the staff changes Alabama is planning to undergo this offseason, another can be expected at inside linebackers coach. Robert Bala, who just completed his first season in Tuscaloosa, seemingly confirmed news that he won’t be retained on new coach Kalen DeBoer’s staff.

Bala tweeted Thursday afternoon: “Thankful for the opportunity. It’s been real, will always rock with #RollTide.”

Bala was a defensive analyst at Liberty under Hugh Freeze in 2022 and was promoted a year later before accepting a job for Nick Saban. UA managed a variety of injuries at inside linebacker. Bala helped develop Deontae Lawson, Jihaad Campbell and Trezmen Marshall — the former two are staying with UA while Marshall graduated.

DeBoer has been active in hiring his lieutenants. No official hires have been announced, but multiple outlets have reported a mix from UW and in-state, most notably Huskies’ offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb and South Alabama head coach Kane Wommack (defensive coordinator). DeBoer has also reportedly pitched Maurice Linguist to coach defensive backs.

AL.com’s Creg Stephenson confirmed that Matt Shadeed, a Wommack assistant, will follow his former employer north.

Running backs coach Robert Gillespie and defensive line coach Freddie Roach, in addition to some support staffers, are expected to stay. Gillespie was recruiting at Central-Phenix City High on Thursday morning.
